Guideline 3: Preventing HCV transmission in hemodialysis units

چکیده

3.1 Hemodialysis units should ensure implementation of, and adherence to, strict infection-control procedures designed to prevent transmission of blood-borne pathogens, including HCV. (Strong) K Isolation of HCV-infected patients is not recommended as an alternative to strict infection-control procedures for preventing transmission of blood-borne pathogens. (Weak) K The use of dedicated dialysis machines for HCVinfected patients is not recommended. (Moderate) K Where dialyzer reuse is unavoidable, it is suggested that the dialyzers of HCV-infected patients can be reused provided there is implementation of, and adherence to, strict infection-control procedures. (Weak) 3.2 Infection-control procedures should include hygienic precautions (Tables 18 and 19) that effectively prevent the transfer of blood—or fluids contaminated with blood—between patients, either directly or via contaminated equipment or surfaces. (Strong) K It is suggested to integrate regular observational audits of infection-control procedures in performance reviews of hemodialysis units. (Weak)

Healthcare workers and prevention of hepatitis C virus transmission: exploring knowledge, attitudes and evidence-based practices in hemodialysis units in Italy

BACKGROUND Evidence exists regarding the full prevention of HCV transmission to hemodialysis patients by implementing universal precaution. However, little information is available regarding the frequency with which hospitals have adopted evidence-based practices for preventing HCV infection among hemodialysis patients. A cross-sectional survey has been conducted among nurses in Calabria region...

Long term survey of hepatitis C virus infection in hemodialysis units in Fukuoka, Japan.

To examine prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and liver dysfunction in hemodialysis units, we surveyed markers for HCV infection and serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in hemodialysis patients. 204 hemodialysis patients (111 men and 93 women; mean age, 53 +/- 12 years) in four hemodialysis units in Fukuoka, Japan were investigated. All serum samples were tested for antibody to HC...

The impact of nurse understaffing on the transmission of hepatitis C virus in a hospital-based hemodialysis unit.

OBJECTIVE To determine the impact of nurse understaffing on the transmission of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in a large hospital-based hemodialysis (HD) unit with a high HCV prevalence. SUBJECTS AND METHODS The records of 198 patients (107 males and 91 females) with end-stage renal disease enrolled on long-term HD at King Fahad Hospital and Tertiary Care Center, Hofuf, Saudi Arabia, from...

Evaluation of an Isolation Program of Hepatitis C Virus Infected Hemodialysis Patients in Some Hemodialysis Centers in Egypt

Introduction. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Several studies demonstrated nosocomial transmission of HCV among HD patients. Aim. We aimed to evaluate the isolation program of HCV seropositive patients among a group of Egyptian haemodialysis patients to decrease the incidence of HCV seroconversion. Methods. One h...

Prevalence of hepatitis C, hepatitis B, and HIV infection among hemodialysis patients in Jenin District (Palestine)

Background and Aims: End-stage renal disease patients treated by hemodialysis (HD) are more susceptible for infection by viral hepatitis and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections. Infection by these viruses is promoted by the characteristic immunological dysfunction that develops in renal failure and interferes with the patient's ability to eliminate these viruses. Prevalence of these v...
